Dog tail docking
My brothers GSP had a litter of 8 pups a few days ago and he asked me to run him and the pups to a vet he had managed to find that would dock the pups tails . My father has always done it in the past but these days over here if you are caught with a dog that has a docked tail and you have not got the vets licence you are in deep trouble.
It is hard to find a vet who will dock tails because they are targeted by the animal rights movement who can causee them some real trouble so most vets don't want the bother .
We drove 2.5 hours to a kennels up in the valleys where the vet met us and did his job and my brother handed over $320 . The paper work took longer than the tail docking and the vet told him that in the next 7 weeks he will have to have the pups fitted with a micro chip so as to identify them as the pups on the licences ( another $320 to pay out ).Then he will have to pay the kennel club to register the pups .
No wonder a dog costs so much to buy and we haven't even talked about injections yet.

Re: Dog tail docking
Wow that is really a bit of a stink .... I believe when we had a litter of GSP .. Tails,Dewclaws, and shots for the litter was about that much .... roughly the cost of 1 pup .........
Seems the Anti's have got the run of the place over there ......

Re: Dog tail docking
Sadie goes in Monday to be spayed, dew claws removed (not done at birth) and chipped. $325.00. I live in a rural, hunting dog type area, my vet is very pro tail bob and remove dew claw for the dogs safety. Anti's don't do well around here.

Ain't that the truth! Also protects the shins from taking a beating. My daughter has an American Bulldog/Pit mix that will bring tears to your eyes if she's excited.

Re: Dog tail docking
I wouldn't like to lose anything, so why do the dogs have to if they're not used for hunting??
Seems a bit cruel just to remove their tails for no reason.

Re: Dog tail docking
You have to prove they are intended to be used for hunting before you can have their tails docked .Working dogs tails can realy take a bashing and trying to stop the bleeding on a long tail that is being constantly wagged takes some doing .

Kind of shows the stupidiity of some of these animal laws. The worst tail-bleeder I ever saw was a Dalmation belonging to my then-girlfriend, and he didn't hunt anything but biscuits.

Re: Dog tail docking
In other words, it's a dog getting it's tail cropped, lighten up.
Oh and on the original topic, that cost is ridiculous. I remember growing up the only trips we made to the vet were to refill the bottles we used to give our own pets their shots.
We never cropped our dogs tails but I did crop a cat's tail once. The poor thing got caught by a coyote or something, stripped it bare. Pretty nasty. So to save the poor thing from getting a nasty infection, got out the pruners and SNIP took it right off. Little peroxide and she was good as new.
Total cost - $0.00 no microchip needed either

Re: Dog tail docking
Tails and dew claws are easily injured in the field and difficult to treat and keep from infection. Removal is safer for the dog.

Thats exactly what I believe, why dock a dogs tail unless its actually a working dog. My friends gun dogs had their tails docked because they were going to be used for hunting, now i can understand why because there is a real purpose.

Re: Dog tail docking
I thought this blog was interesting.
http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com...to-ignore.html
An excerpt (and not even the best part ):
"...The tail docking debate is really about a very small but vocal sector of society wanting to be nannies to the rest of us.
As a general rule these people know very little about dogs, know nothing about working dogs, and do not give a rat's behind about honest animal welfare -- if they did, they would pick a real issue to take action on.
And there are a LOT of real animal welfare issues. How about habitat protection? How about disease control in wild animal populations (rabies, distemper, mange, tuberculosis, chronic wasting disease, West Nile)? How about pushing to lower the price of veterinary care and improving access to it as well? These are real issues.
Fair warning, however -- making a change in these arenas might involve actually going out into the environment with mud, bugs, rain and cold (Ugh!).
In addition, a real problem might be inconveniently complex and serious (God forbid!), and actually involve something more involved than self-righteous bullying of ignorant legislators and dog owners.
But of course, the tail-docking debate is not really about dogs, is it? It's about people who want to feel smarter and superior to others. These people will always be with us and I suggest they simply find something new to feel smarter and superior about..."
