Recurves are simple and easy to maintain, are lighter, and the faster ones are also wider.

Compounds tend to be more compact, heavier, and have twice the string/cable to maintain.

Easiest way to have it all covered.......buy at least one of each. I did.

LOL!!! That about covers it

Excalibur makes the best Recurve style( in my opinion) and the reverse technology compound xbow is flat out amazing

Really no different than a vertical bow. Just 'cause it's turned on it's side doesn't mean that anything else changes.

The poundage changes, also the weight!

I was referring to the basic principals of function. A compound, regardless of configuration, will always be noisier due to having the weight of the pullies on the limb tips.

Yes, poundage is different, but so would a vertical be if it were <30" ATA with a 14" draw length to achive the same speed. If you're going to compare, then compare apples to apples.

Bottom line: A crossbow, to achive similar balistics to a vertical, will aways be noisier. It's one of the drawbacks of needing 175# draw weight to get 300fps+, because you only have a 14" draw length. It's also the reason for fixed trigger release.
(just try to draw and hold 175# @14" by hand )

Some manufacturers are starting to make lower draw weight bows with longer power strokes to get the desired speed. Bullpup style and reverse limb technology bows make it possible, w/o adding length, so the bow isn't to un-weildy.
