Default How much land?

How much would it take to succesful management system ? Would 600 acres be enough to support 4-5 hunters ?

That's plenty of room.

If you're gonna shotgun/ rifle hunt it too, be sure each of you knows where everybody else is gonna be, and once you get there, STAY there. No wandering around come firearm season!!

That's plenty where you really benefit is if you can talk to your neighbors and get them on the same plan. Then it benefits everyone and it don't require you to have as much land to have quality deer.

I have a doctor with 360 to the south of me that has been working on management for about 5years . The land to the west 180 acres is no hunting allowed , north is a lake but to the east 10 different people own it from the Chicago area, rape and pillage the woods. In fact some of them were busted four years ago with 28 deer hanging in the shed . They were selling it down in the city . The hunting still has not yet recovered .

If I were you, I would be hunting the west to southwest corner from the way it sounds! If those guys are still doing that they will run them in your direction.

We have two stands on that area . They only own a fourty . They were nailed two weeks before rifle season and no deer were tagged . Between the Doc and us , we have roughly 80 acres in food plots . But were not seeing any mature deer . 2-3 year old max .

Stick to your guns, be patient. It doesn't happen overnight but you'll be happy when you give them another year or two. Watch your doe population and keep records of what you see, weather conditions, day, month and year, age the does and bucks you take and go back year to year and reference these records. This really helps nail down your activity and growth, which stands are more productive on certain conditions etc. There is even software out now to help you.

up here I have sole access to 6000 acres of land, own most of it myself. I let my brothers (2) and two friends on it with me and my little guy. We seem to have a good quality of deer running around on the place also as we are pretty picky as to what we harvest.

600 acres is about right for our area where we live. I'm kind of surprised at what some of you seem to think by game management he means how many hunters you allow on the acreage.

It's not about how many hunters you allow out there to hunt the deer. It's how many deer and which ones you allow to be taken. That is proper game management!

With 600 acres I think you could be off to a good start. Beyond that it helps to have knowledge of the landowners surrounding the property and what their game management plans are. A square mile(640 acres) is usually a whitetails home ground that he will stay on. But too much pressure can push him off of that. So you really need to get yourself an topography map of the place and mark out your funnel areas, bedding areas, water source, and food source on your property and how it coincides with the land around you. The acreage isn't as important as what is in it.

I have 90 acres, and hunt for the most part by myself. Here in Switzerland County, in SE Indiana, we still have one of the highest deer populations in the state, but I don't let a lot of people hunt, only mostly family. I have strict rules about killing small bucks, taking does, and it seems to help the quality of deer remaining. Sometimes it's tough to watch a nice 8 point walk away, but next year, he will probably be a 10 or more.

Although the amount of woods could support the hunters you have. Keep in mind you dont wanna bunch hunters together so that 1 of them with a bad wind direction could screw the rest.

Thats something we battle every rifle hunting season and I'm hoping to change that, since they are all typical rifle hunters and have no concern on wind direction.
